Fun Machine! August 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this machine in May, after much research. I was looking for a new machine, that had more stitch options, and was easy to use. I came across this one, and decided to order. It has been SO much fun creating all kinds of personalized bags and blankets for the nieces and nephews. The PED basic software allows for even more designs than you can imagine! I would give this 5 stars, but it's not a heavy duty machine. It doesn't like going through really thick layers. I have had a few problems with the tread balling up underneath, when embroidery, but it is usually because the thread was tangled up a little, (user error). I have also stopped breaking kneedles as often after I started using a little heavier kneedle. I love this machine. It was a great deal for the price!
Updated review: I had to take my machine in to get serviced, because it started making a kind of clunking noise when I was embroidering. The repairman told me it was a flaw in the machine, that has since been fixed. He was able to fix it, only a new problem arose in the time I took it to the shop to get fixed and when I got it home. The needle wouldn't move when I was trying to select different stitches. I took it in again, and the repairman was unable to identify the problem, and sent the machine back to Brother, to see if they could figure out what was wrong with it. It has been 2 weeks now, and I still haven't heard anything. Even though there was this problem, I still love this machine and all that I have been able to create with it! I hope to get it back soon.
Hobbyist August 27, 2008 This machine is very tempermental. It jams easily and then tears holes in fabric. If all of the stars "align" you might get a couple good embroidered designs before it stops automatically threading it's self. I have read and reread the manual and am following the directions carefully, but I still find it has problems about 50% of the time. I'm thinking that I should have spent more money on a better model.
Great little machine! August 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was surprised at how easy this machine is to use. Computerized and with a lot of features my other sewing machines lacked, I thought it was going to take me a long time to get it up and running, not to mention getting used to it.
Set up is very easy, manual is extremely user friendly and simple to follow and well illustrated.
This machine rocks! The embroidery quality is over the top - I would have expected this quality from a much more expensive machine. It sews like a dream. More than worth what I paid for it.
There is no way you can mess up embroidering with this machine - the onboard computer walks you through every step. If your bobbin is not threaded correctly, the machine beeps and displays a message about what the problem is - you don't have to guess! This machine takes the hassle out of threading the needle and bobbin. The Thread Cassette works very well. I was skeptical about just placing the bobbin in it's case without pulling it up through the plate, but it works perfectly. And you will LOVE the setting to auto cut the thread when embroidering.
The reason I didn't give this machine 5 stars is because of an issue I and two other friends experienced with winding the bobbin. I recommend you set the speed control all the way to the left (slowest) or no faster than the middle setting (medium speed). I cranked it all the way up on high, like the book said. The thread somehow managed to slip off the bobbin and wound around the spindle below the bobbin. A word of caution: keep an eye on your bobbin and wind it slower than what the book recommends!
Awesome machine for even beginners August 8, 2008 I am a self-taught sewer from 1986 and have always wanted to upgrade to a computerized machine and I have always had an interest in machine embroidery. But the cost was always prohibitive. This machine is worth every penny and then some. I started sewing as soon as I set the machine up - which isn't hard to do. Even a beginning sewer will be able to use this machine without a problem. The same for the embroidery. The only downside is that there are so many 'accessories' that I want, I can't choose!
