Khaddar is a fine, homespun cotton material. The fame ascribed to this traditional cloth stems from the great Mahatma Gandhi and his Khadi movement of 1920. Gandhi had urged the Indian people to hand-loom their own fabric, and boycott British mill-woven textile. This non-violent protest boosted the Indian economy and served as a display of patriotism. The light, soft khaddar material is still hand-loomed in villages in the Subcontinent today, and is used to fashion a variety of trendy home textiles, including curtains, bed linen, pillow covers, wall hangings, table linen, and garments.
