Product Description Designing Tessellations opens the door for quilters to thousands of new and exciting patterns by showing them how to create tessellations--designs made up of the repeated use of seemingly complex but deceptively simple shapes that interlock perfectly to flow across a quilt. Inspired by artist M. C. Escher, Jinny Beyer introduces quilters to the fascinating world of symmetry and then clearly shows how to experiment with shapes and images to create sensational, tessellating designs. Quilters will not only learn how to produce interlocking geometric patterns, but also will learn how easy it is to create true-to-life images of birds, fish, butterflies, and more in the style of Escher. Features include: - More than 125 color photographs and 2,000 step-by-step color drawings - Dozens of quilts featuring tessellated designs

Wow! December 28, 2008 There's a reason this book has received mostly five stars -- this is a perfect example of a book written for visual people. It starts with small pieces and slowly builds to more complex actions, all illustrated in many different ways with a ton of examples. If you've ever looked at M.C. Escher's work and wondered "how did he do that?" this book will teach you.
A Real "How To---" April 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This author has done a really superb job in applying the principles of tesselation to pattern design. Anyone wishing to find how to make an original pattern has all the tools in this book. It is a real find.
Useful and inspirational in many ways August 12, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is one of my absolute favorite design books. While it's primarily directed to designing quilts, it's tremendously useful for designing patterns in any craft that uses modules or blocks, especially crochet or knitting.
While densely packed with information, it's written in a way which is readily understood, with plenty of examples and illustrations. It's best to work through in sections, taking the time to absorb the principles and play with the ideas, instead of trying to rush through everything.
I showed this book to a friend who's an art collecter and a particular fan of Escher. He ordered his own copy that very day, after I had to pry his fingers off of my copy.

Jinny explains tessellations in a way that is easy to follow. I love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn to design their own tessellations.
