Product Description
With a sense of humor and creative abandon, renowned mixed-media artist Beryl Taylor shows you how surprisingly easy it is to turn fabric, stitch, and embellishment into artistic treasures to keep and share. Using her own art as examples, Beryl gives step-by-step instructions for making projects like greeting cards, wall hangings, and books using the latest mixed-media techniques, all the while encouraging readers to follow their own instincts and experiment. In Mixed-Media Explorations you'll learn how to: apply basic design principles like layering, highlighting motifs, and creating grids to give your art depth and meaning; use six simple embroidery stitches to add interest and texture; turn favorite papers into fabrics that can then be stitched or quilted; "age" your art by etching, burning, and tearing; create richness with metallic threads, paint, and rub-ons; "embed" fibers and found objects; use everyday items like brown grocery bags, wallpaper scraps, and bleach to create texture; stitch through metal.

Beautiful December 20, 2007 A beautiful book all around -- excellent photography, clear instruction, and beautiful projects which feature a fascinating blend of fabric and papers.
Focus here is on FABRIC, not paper October 10, 2007 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
My 1-star rating is actually for the description of this book and not the book itself. Let me explain...
Based on the publisher's description of this book I thought it would be about mixed media projects in the traditional sense (i.e. paper-based collages with embellishments in paint, beads, scraps of fabric, etc.) I was really surprised when I received the book to find that all of the projects in it are fabric or sewing based. Perhaps this would not have come as such a surprise had I been familiar with the author's work, but I bought this book because it was one of the "Amazon Recommends" selections suggested to me based on my previous purchases of mixed media/collage/altered art books and because of the publisher's misleading description.
This is a beautiful book if you are interested in working primarily with fabrics & quilt art. The step-by-step instructions seem very thorough and there are lots of great ideas for working with fabric in inventive ways including some great tips for dying fabric and infusing fabric with paper.
Bottom line: if I were running a bookstore I would shelve this with books on sewing and quilting, NOT in the mixed media/collage section. I hope this helps!
I was so inspired I made 3 Beryl-esque projects already! September 14, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After buying this book, I pushed everything off my work space and dug right in. I dyed some silk I had on hand and off I went. I love the feeling of stitching thru paper and fabric. I forgot how soothing hand stitching and beading are. I sank into a calming realm with the pastel colors shown in the book. I picked up some great techniques that I will apply to my altered art in the future.
So-o-o Inspiring! May 16, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've loved every project Beryl Taylor has designed. Her work speaks to me, and makes me want to try all of her techniques. The book is beautiful, and, I hope there will be more from her in the future.

What a beautiful book! I have been an artist for years, but recently have begun to explore this type of mixed media, altered, collage work. The photography of the projects is awesome. Real eye candy. The inspiration from the projects is priceless. I will say, my husband, who is a graphic artist, loved the lusciousness of the pictures and graphic layout - but he didn't really "get" the projects. A little too feminine or not enough function to the form I guess. I wish it had been a hard back book, rather than soft cover. I'm sure my will be "worse for the wear" after spending a little time in my studio. All in all, a lovely book, full of inspirational projects, well written and worth it's price.
