Product Description It?s not your grandmother?s quilt world anymore. Quilting today is a phenomenally popular hobby, artform, and business, often rolled into one, that attracts 21 million avid quilters who spend $2.27 billion annually on their passion. There are 2,500 quilt shops around the country, popular television series, guilds, Web sites, and national fairs?one in Houston draws 50,000 visitors each year.
Meg Cox, a former reporter for The Wall Street Journal, is one of the obsessive new quilters, and in The Quilter's Catalog, she draws on all her skills as a journalist to write the essential resource for contemporary quilters. Here?s the low-down on tools: computer-driven sewing machines, innovative rotary cutters, longarms. New and old techniques, from how to dye your own fabric to cutting-edge digital photo-transfer. Profiles of the twenty top quilting teachers? television?s Alex Anderson, Esterita Austin and her award-winning landscape quilts, Ruth McDowell, known for her bravura technique. Who makes the best fabrics and how to find them. A complete resource guide to the best Web sites, online groups, books, patterns, stores, shows, challenges. And a look at the new world of quiltaholics: its sense of community, its opportunities for business, its controversies (hand-sewn vs. machine-sewn), its attractions?quilting is easy, portable, friendly, therapeutic, often profitable, and the perfect way to mark a milestone.
The book includes 12 step-by-step projects from key teachers?a crib quilt, bed quilts, quilted ornaments?and instructions on how to hang, store, or ship a quilt.

Fascinating book December 29, 2008 I read it cover to cover like a novel. I am new to quilting (1 1/2 years) and this book gave me answers to a lot of questions. I think it's a must have book for any quilter.
A totally unexpected treat! December 2, 2008 Unlike some other people, I wasn't immediately attracted to the book when I first saw it in a quilt shop. But after happening upon several good reviews and realizing this was the book I'd seen, I ordered it. I love it! For a quilting junkie, it's just a fun read--lots and lots of stuff about our passion. For a newbie, lots of info I wish I'd had when I first started, and a great introduction to the world of quilting. Well-indexed, it's a sort of quilter's almanac, but I'm also really enjoying reading it straight through. It's a keeper.
Disappointing lack of color November 23, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book received great reviews in my quilting magazines but no one mentioned that it was almost entirely black and white photos. Quilters love color, and I would not have purchased this had I known. No wonder my favorite quilt shops did not carry this!
Calling all Quilters! November 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Whether you've been quilting for years, or a "newbie" like me, you will like this book (a lot!). My daughter first showed The Quilter's Catalog to me, I checked it out from the library, and I had to get one of my own! It will take you months to absorb all the information, web sites, tips, everything! Every time I open it, I find something new. This is going to be the perfect Christmas present for my "quilting guru" (my next door neighbor). Although she's been a quilter for years, and probably knows just about all there is to know about quilt making, I'm sure she will enjoy this book as much as I do. Cheers for author Meg - this is one of my best craft books - and I have a BUNCH of them!
Comprehensive October 14, 2008 This is a great source book. I have been quilting for quite some time but found valuable new information in this book. It should be on every quilters book shelf.
