Product Description
The Master Quilter opens with the sound of wedding bells ringing in the ears of the Elm Creek Quilters. The close-knit group can hardly believe that their own Sylvia Compson planned her holiday wedding to sweetheart Andrew in complete secrecy, without the help of even one of her friends. Eager to honor the newlyweds, the Elm Creek Quilters hasten to stitch a bridal quilt for their favorite Master Quilter. Until the time comes to unveil the surprise gift, they reason, Sylvia will be the one in the dark. Such little white lies seem harmless enough, especially in the service of future happiness. Yet Elm Creek Manor, and the quilting retreat established there by the Elm Creek Quilters, thrives on the strength of women sharing their creativity, their challenges, and their dreams. Somehow, in the race to commemorate in Sylvia's bridal quilt all that they hold dear about her wisdom, skill, and devotion, they forget to give honesty its pride of place. As the quilt blocks accumulate, the Elm Creek Quilters celebrate the joy of new beginnings and the ongoing success of their business -- until forces conspire to threaten their happiness and prosperity. Two among them falter in their personal relationships, yet they are too proud to share their pain. The financial problems of another leave the quilt project vulnerable to a malicious act that may prevent its completion. And as two others weigh the comfort of the present against dreams of a future far from Elm Creek Manor, closely guarded secrets strain the bonds of friendship with those who may be left behind. The Dallas Morning News has praised the Elm Creek Quilts series as "classics of their kind," and The Master Quilter is Chiaverini's latest gift to readers.

A Cozy Quilt On A Cold Winters Night September 8, 2008 The Master Quilter
I'm sure I skipped ahead with this book, since Sylvia is now married and I didn't see it coming. I still enjoyed jumping into this story. Quilt Camp has been established at Elm Creek Manor. Each of the quilters, from the Tangled Web Quilters, takes part in teaching classes on different aspects of quilting. Sylvia Compson, the owner of the manor, is able to share her vast knowledge of quilting, with both new and experienced quilters. Sarah and Matt McClure live year-round at the manor. Sarah is the bookkeeper, while Matt is the groundskeeper.
This story is woven in with the lives of the quilters. Sylvia got married to Andrew, and the Elm Creek Quilters want to make her and her husband a wedding quilt. Sarah sends out letters to Sylvia's friends and those who have attended quilt camp at the Elm Creek Manor, so they can make a special square for the quilt. Each camper writes a story along with the square, to tell what Sylvia means to them.
In this story, Gwen Sulluvan, the hippie mom, is passed over for a position at the college, where she works, for a younger colleague. Her daughter, Summer, has moved in with her boyfriend, Jeremy, without even telling her mother. Judy, who is from Viet Nam, and also a professor, is given an opportunity to teach at a larger college, but she is hesitant to let anyone in on her secret.
Diane, who is sometimes mouthy, and her neighbor, Mary Beth, who is the head of the Quilter's Guild, are feuding, but their boys are best friends. The feud has gone too far, and now the boys are involved.
Bonnie's quilt shop, Grandma's Attic, is losing money. Bonnie she is trying to keep the business going, when her husband, Craig, secretly meets with a realtor to sell the business. Bonnie is ashamed to let her friends know her business is in trouble, not to mention her marriage.
Agnes and Sylvia, who are sisters-in-law, have been estranged for many years. They are able to pick up the thread of friendship and become better friends than ever before.
Will the Elm Creek Quilt Camp survive the changes in the lives of these friends? Will Bonnie ever be able to recoup her losses from Grandma's Attic and get her life back on track? Will Sarah be able to get enough squares to finish Sylvia's wedding quilt? Will the ladies be able to remain friends, with Judy moving away?
Reading about the love and friendships of the Elm Creek Quilters is as cozy as a warm quilt, on a cold winters night.

Elm creek quilt series are great reads for quilters! February 11, 2008 I enjoyed the book, not as much as the first on in the series but it did keep my attention, so much so that I couldn't put it down and stayed up all night reading it. I love stories about quilts and quilters - I'm an avid quilter myself. The Elm creek quilt series are well written and in- volve you in the lives of a group of people that you can identify with. Great fun - I would recommend it highly.
The lives of the quilter ladies continue with problems and changes January 26, 2008 In this sixth book of the Elm Creek Quilters, all of the ladies, Diane, Summer, Gwen, Judy, Sara, and Bonnie are gathered together to plan a secret gift. That is to make a bridal quilt for Sylvia since Sylvia married Andrew in a hurry, and no one had a chance to give her a special gift. They will need over 150 quilt blocks altogether, each one showing what Sylvia has meant to them. Getting this quilt finished by the deadline they want will be nothing short of a miracle as many obstacles come their way.
For starters, Bonnie is having nothing but problems between her failing marriage leading to a bitter divorce from Craig, to Grandma's Attic falling apart before her eyes. The realtor wants to buy the shop out from under Bonnie as well as the other tenants, and this means her home in the condo above as well.
Bonnie sent an invitation to Waterford Quilter's Guild, soliciting them for blocks in Sylvia's quilt to stitch in. But Mary Beth, ever resentful as always with Diana especially, wants no part of Elm Creek Quilts, and tries to stand in the way. Diane puts up a bitter war with her adversary neighbor, and when the unthinkable happens, and Grandma's Attic is broken into, more problems then ever arise. And Bonnie will not be able to recover the store unless she can prove to the insurance company that the burglary was an inside job.
Gwen is having her share of troubles. As professor at Waterford College, she really feels she has finally earned top place in her department. Then when the professor with not as much seniority as herself comes along and does a research project that is much more appealing then her own, she gets knocked down, and is devastated by this. And her daughter Summer is also going through changes with her boyfriend Jeremy who wants her to move in with him. Summer isn't sure she really wants a commitment as much as Jeremy does and they go through a lot of trauma until they work things out.
In the end, the book winds up well as everyone solves their troubles and things come to work out hopefully for the best.
Friendships and mystery. December 8, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was obviously not the first in the series, but this is where I decided to jump in. I am hooked! Women and friendships, plus a bit of mystery, I couldn't put it down, even when my eyes were trying to shut on me.
It was a bit confusing at the beginning when it reads back and forth, but I soon caught on and it had me hook, line and sinker. I love the books without foul language, sex etc.
It starts out, Sylvia gets married without telling anyone, and so the ladies decide to have everyone make a quilt piece for a quilt for the newlyweds. Someone breaks into the quilt shop, destroys a dream and takes all the made quilt pieces. Who was it? Why did they do it? Will friendships be torn apart with so many secrets? Read this and find out!
