3 out of 5 stars Larger than a standard incandescent bulb   December 4, 2008

Just want folks to be aware that these measure approximately 6.5" in length, or about an inch longer than a typical-sized incandescent bulb (like 60 or 100 W variety). I was interested in getting one of these to replace the 50/100/150 W incandescent bulb in my living room lamp (the tall, free-standing kind), but found it too be too long as it comes out of the top by about an inch. For now I am waiting for a company to come out with a CFL 50/100/150 equivalent that matches up in size better.

4 out of 5 stars Not suitable for my 3-way touch lamps   October 27, 2008
I was really hoping to use these in my 3-way touch lamps that I use most frequently, but my lamps work with normal 1 filament bulbs by dimming them and these 3-way CFLs didn't work right (instead of 3 light levels I would only get one). This is not the fault of the bulbs, I just thought I would mention it.

The bulbs themselves, when in the correct fixtures, work fine. There is a brief pause (maybe half a second) between turning on the lamp and when the CFL turns on, but otherwise the transitions are quick and the light level is steady. I do however, think the difference between the levels is less than in a standard 3-way incandescent bulb.

One note about the light color. Another reviewer had mentioned that the color of the bulb's light was objectionable, but I think it is pretty comparable to a "soft white" bulb (which is yellowish), which is how these are advertised. They definitely aren't meant to, nor are they advertised to, have the same color profile as a full spectrum bulb.

5 out of 5 stars great bulbs!   June 30, 2008
I am trying to slowly change all my light bulbs to energy smart bulbs but couldn't find 3-way up to 150 watt. Discovered some on Amazon and they work very good.

2 out of 5 stars I Expected More and Got Less ....   March 27, 2008

I bought these as replacements for Verilux 50-100-150 Daylight Spectrum incandescent light bulbs. The Verilux bulbs are great in the winter time, effectively warding off SAD, and they last a long time before burning out (I replaced one about every 2 or 3 years). I was enticed by the description of the CFL's as having the same light as a soft white light and that they used less electricity, so I took a chance.

The CFL bulbs are not all they're cracked up to be. Sure, they may use less electricity and thay may last a long time but they have their drawbacks. For one, they're taller than the lights they replace, about an inch to an inch-and-a-half taller. They just barely fit within my lamp's harp and since they're square at the top, they just graze the round top of the harp. On a second lamp, they're so tall they prevent the harp from fully seating on the bulb holder, so the installation does not accept any robust handling. Good thing that light is switched on from a wall switch.

Second, in spite of being advertised as having the same light as a soft white bulb, they give off a slightly greenish glow that is not as pleasant as the Verilux bulbs they replace. Is that what they mean when they say CFL bulbs are environmentally "green?" Still, the light they give off is bright enough, and there's a distinct increase in brightness as one goes from the 50 to the 100 to the 150-watt setting. All-in-all, the light they give off is OK but it's not a warm or inviting light and in viewing a Verilux bulb and the CFL bulb side-by-side one would not choose the CFL bulb.

Third, if an incandescent bulb breaks, you sweep up the pieces and throw them in the garbage. The CFL's, if I'm not mistaken, have a fine-print warning on the box saying that while they contain only trace amounts of mercury, one should use caution in how they're disposed of. Just how much caution one should use is unsaid and what disposal procedures should be followed is a mystery to me.

In sum, don't expect these bulbs to give off the same soft white light you're used to. Be cautious in handling them. Be sure you have an inch or so of extra space above the 50-100-150 bulb you're replacing.

Oh, one more thing: they take about a second to light up after they're switched on (so ignore the thought that maybe it burned out), and when they do light up they are noticeably dim for the first 15 seconds or so until they "warm" up.

5 out of 5 stars Nice warm light ...   January 21, 2008

If you're looking to move to more environmentally-friendly lighting, these are for you. These 3-way spiral fluorescent bulbs are wonderful. I haven't had mine long enough to address the extended lifespan. But they serve beautifully as a replacement for standard 3-way 50-100-150W incandescent bulbs.

The "color" of the light is very warm -- not at all like the greenish-bluish tone one usually associates with fluorescent light. It does take a few seconds for the full intensity of the light to develop at the 29W (150W-equivalent) level, so keep that in mind. It comes on fairly dim, then develops the bright light you expect in about 15 seconds or so.

I'm currently in grad school (an older "non-traditional" student), and I do a LOT of reading. I'd been going through standard 3-way bulbs about one every 3 months or so, so I was looking for a more economical solution. The claim for "7 year life" is based on 4 hours per day of use. I know I use mine a lot more than that (more like 18 hrs or so), so I don't expect 7 years. But if they last more than about 24 months, they'll pay for themselves.

Also, my local discount hardware store charges $22.99 apiece for the exact same bulb, so Amazon's price is a good deal.
