The names in this book are improper and NOT REAL! August 16, 2008 According to this book, the name (for lack of a better word) Preya is a variant of Prayer and means prayer. Sorry, but it doesn't. Preya is made up and trashy. Also, apparently Lawanda is German and means "the wanderer". Unfortunately, that would be "das wanderen". Furthermore, Sigmund DOES NOT EQUAL Zygismondo. At all. Sorry. Wales is not a name, nor is Whales a variant. And Syk is not a variant of Psyche. These names are trashy, kre8tyvve forms of *some* actual names. I would not consider this book credible at all.
The Editor must not have read this at all! August 15, 2008 There are so many problems with this book... I'm just going to list them:
1. Most of the meanings of the names are NOT correct and do NOT have the correct language/culture of origin.
2. Other Factual Errors: Under the named Wales it says that Wales is a country within England... um, NO. It's a country within the United Kingdom and which is next to England. That's just one of the MANY factual errors.
3. It's not really a book of many different names but a book of dozens of spelling variations for the same name - many of which are completely unusable. For example it provides Semenffa as a variation of Samantha - SEMENffa! It's a completely different (and horrible) name. Another - Syk for Psyche. Psyche is pronounced "syk-ee" not "syk," "sike" is what you say when you trick someone, while Psyche means "the soul."
There are so many more errors within this book that I am absolutely convinced no editor read through it at all. It's a shame such a thing is even allowed to be published...
Full of good names January 5, 2007 We looked at both boys and girls names and found a large variety of names. The definitions and variations was very helpful.
looking for a unique name?..treat this book with caution! September 20, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If youre looking for an arabic or otherwise unique name DON'T bother buying this book! Firstly the prounciation of the names is not shown, secondly the meanings for many are not accurate, thirdly the book is laid out as a list - which I thought would be good however with all these names I'd rather have a more organised way of sorting through them other than alphbetically. Finally there are plenty of baby names it calls "names" which are simply words translated. For example one name, arabic "Kilab" translation DOG. Who in there right mind would call there kid dog?! I'm only suprised it doesnt say english name "Dog" translation dog, what a great name?! Also the word Kafir is there and is being called a name, in the arabic tradition (and I suspect in all religious traditions) no one would ever call the child by this name as it means "unbeliever" ie someone who does not believe in God - and it is not a name nor has it ever in the history of the arabic language been used as a name. I would also like to add the book often repeats names as new but they are simply spelt dyfffarantlly and have strange pronounciations. I feel bad for those people who take this books word for meaning and prounciation for any other traditions except english! Those looking for a unique name treat this book with extreme caution!
Too much March 23, 2006 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
The book has too many names to review. It lists names from everywhere in the world, and even though the United States has a great amount of diversity, I was not interested in sorting through names that I couldn't even pronounce. Not to be critical of other countries and languages' names, but it would have just as useful to make up my own names which is obviously not why I bought the book. I found my time wasted by trying to sort through the pages and trying to find at least one familiar name on every two or three pages. If you want a dictionary of all names, then maybe this is helpful. But, I believe most people want a name that fits their language, culture, and country.
